Contest Recap: Great American Barbecue

Great American Barbecue FestivalOnce again the Great American Barbecue was a great weekend to spend cooking outdoors. This year the organizers bumped the date up to be the week before the long Memorial Day holiday weekend. This gave the competition teams the chance to still compete in this great contest, and also be able to spend some valuable family time over the long weekend. Burnt Finger BBQ came out of the weekend with calls in 4 of 8 categories we entered, and two local Kansas City teams walked away with Grand Championships in each of KCBS contests.

Congratulations to our friends from Big Creek BBQ and Boondoogle BBQ for taking home the GC honors in the Open and Invitational contests!!! Out of all the teams competing that weekend, these guys were placed right next to each other and split of the cost of a Johnny. As Bob from Boondoogle says “Teams that *hit together win together!” Nice work gentlemen!

Big Creek BBQ and Boondoggle BBQ

Our team, Burnt Finger BBQ, didn’t quite walk away with hardware of that caliber, but we were darn close. Our dessert posted a perfect score from all 6 judges….but so did one other team’s entry. First place came down to a coin toss, and we lost. That’s okay though, 2nd place and perfect score honors still make for a fantastic weekend. Special thanks to our cheesecake queen Katherine Bresette for another strong showing!

2nd Place Cheesecake

Our other calls were 14th in beans, 16th in vegetables, and 13th in pork in a field of 190 teams.Similar Posts:

Contest Calendar: Great American Barbecue Festival

Great American Barbecue FestivalAre you looking for something fun to do this weekend? Why not head down to Kansas City for one of the greatest barbecue competitions/festivals known to man. May 21st and 22nd will be host to the 6th annual Great American Barbecue Festival at the Wyandotte County Park at Beautiful Capital Federal Park (or Sandstone Amphitheater for those familiar with the KC area). There will be plenty of activities on site to enterain the family, including a carnival, a dedicated Kidz Zone, food/equipment vendors, live music, fireworks, and even a book signing by yours truly!!!

BBQ Makes Everything BetterJust like last year at the GAB, we’ve got a few items planned for you Bacon Explosion fans. Throughout the whole weekend we’ll have a book vendor on site selling copies of BBQ Makes Everything Better directly out of our competition site where we’ll be happy to sign your copy. You’ll probably work up an appetite by flipping through those pages, so we’ll also be selling Bacon Explosion sandwiches as well. A local boy scout troop will be handling all of the food service as a fund raiser, so swing by and purchase a Bacon Explosion sandwich to help them earn enough money to get a trailer for their philanthropic projects!!!
